WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL STATE CHESS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
FEBRUARY 26 AND 27, 2010 AT MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL

150 varsity players and scores of other JV players converged at Meadowdale High School for what is known as "The Big Dance" in high school chess circles, the final event of the season, the State Team Championships. Extreme heavyweights Interlake and Lakeside were favored to win, with average ratings on their teams of five around 1800. When paired with each other in the semifinals, it was a dead tie, 2.5 - 2.5. When the two days of chess were over, Lakeside emerged with more wins and claimed the title of State Champions.

Northwest League champs Lynden played a tough schedule and captured the 10th place trophy. Congratulations Lions! Here's the Northwest team results:
10th Lynden 13.5 points
18th Sehome 11.5
26th Blaine 8.5
27th Sedro-Woolley 7.5
28th Burlington-Edison 7.5
29th Ferndale 6.5

CRASH!
APOLOGY!
Mr. Kaech's computer crashed. The hard drive died and vanished. The computer doctors have given up hope and handed us the hardware on a platter. The backup Ememo mailing list is from late February or so. If you asked to be removed from the emailing list and are now getting it again (or multiple times), I apologize. Please email kaech@verizon.net and ask to be removed again. If you asked to join the mailing list recently, you may not be on it (and you're not reading this!) If you know a player or parent who discovered scholastic chess recently and/or might like to get the Chess Ememo, do forward this Ememo to them. Thanks! By the way... what edition number would this Ememo be?

ATTENTION TEACHERS:
ADD CHESS TO YOUR TOOLBOX
There once was a little group of educator chessplayers in Seattle, who observed that chess benefits kids in several ways, i.e. by teaching thinking skills. So they started the Seattle Chess Foundation, and it grew rapidly, so they changed the name to America's Foundation for Chess. Their 'First Move' program is now taught in school classrooms in 26 states, and Idaho has become the first state to offer a state-wide chess curriculum, using their program. Check it out, and consider employing it in your school or school district.
